D.B. Cooke & Co.'s Railway Guide for Illinois Shewing all the Stations with their Respective Distances Connecting with Chicago. 1855.

This hand-colored map shows the importance of railway lines at a time when most personal transportation was horse-powered and about 100 years before an interstate highway. The map is indexed both by railway line and by city, so it was useful whether you were interested in what route a particular line took or in what routes went through a particular city.

What's Cool in the Map and Geography Library?

(Click on any map on this page and find out!)

The Map and Geography Library contains a rich collection of maps and atlases as well as an extensive collection of books and journals about geography and cartography. Maps in the collection cover geographic areas from imaginary lands and extraterrestrial areas to Illinois and Anahuac, Texas and date from the 1500s to the present. The library also collects aerial photographs for the entire state of Illinois: some counties have photos as old as 1938, and the most recent photos of the entire state were taken in 2005. Another highlight of the collection is the Sanborn fire insurance maps, which show the downtown areas of many Illinois towns and cities to the level of individual structures and their use and composition. These maps were created on a rolling basis and are available from the late 19th through mid-20th century, visually documenting the growth of and changes in urban areas in the state.
